9.2: Six Chemical Classes

-High Fluorinated Chemicals
Usually found in consumer products and it is one of the six classes. These types of chemicals can be around forever and we are exposed to these chemicals in our homes and can be found in 98% of Americans. Children and fetus are the most vulnerable and may lead to kidney and testicular cancer. These chemicals don’t ever break down properly, and it becomes dangerous because it is found in everything we utilize today from our furniture to our makeup. Even those that utilize “substitutes” are dangerous. However, some brands such as Ikea, Adidas, and Puma have already eliminated this chemical from their items.
Antimicrobials
-Antimicrobials are unnecessary and may harm us more than help us and may be found in everyday items such as soaps, paints, flooring, food storage containers and the list goes on. There are two different types triclosan and triclocarban that used to be used in soap and have health concerns such as antibiotic resistants and are found in most of the population today. In 2016 the FDA stopped the use of triclosan in our soaps however there as other products still being used to our everyday products that are also unnecessary and are problematic.
Flame Retardants
-Are meant to stop fires, however, they actually cause the fire to grow larger flames and toxic gasses. Flame retardants are found in almost all Americans, and babies may be exposed and obtain the same amount as their mothers. Toddles is 3 to 10 times the levels of adults or even more that may harm their brains and organs. They are also linked to cancer and lower IQ’s in children, these chemicals also affect animals in the sea and may travel to those in colder areas.
Bisphenols &Phthalates
- They are hormone disrupters and may affect the way our body works even with the smallest amount. We may obtain these chemicals through our water bottles and food consumption however they do not stay in our bodies for long as long as we stay away from them. Bisphenols are hardening agents such as plastic containers and Phthalates are used for softer plastics such as rubber ducks.
Some Solvents
- We breathe in the solvents through our skin such as paint, cosmetics, markers, nail polish remover and many more. Some solvents may end up in our drinking water and may contribute to smog in the air. The main solvent used in nail salon may increase our risk of cancers and the smallest level of exposure may be harmful.
Certain Metals
- This pertains to mercury, arsenic, lead, and cadmium. We are exposed to these chemicals from our food and water. Mercury is usually found in fish and too much may cause damage to kidneys. Arsenic is found in grains or infant cereal and may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Cadmium is found in costume jewelry and may damage lung and kidneys. Lead is found in buildings and paint and may cause harm to brain development and high blood pressure.
