The village of Skidegate on Haida Gwaii off of the British Columbia’s northwestern coast, people are keeping their culture alive by fishing and foraging for traditional foods on the islands. For the Haida people, food is not only food but more like medicine. Locale hospitals used to serve these fresh foods such as fruits and fresh fish to their patients and in most recent years they have only served packed frozen foods. Locals are not trying to go back to fresh foods, by cooking the meals fresh from scratch at least once a month and help reduce the number of processed foods they are having and serving fresh foods to their communities/ patients.
Turning away from processed foods and towards whole and fresh foods is great for everyone, especially for patients in these local hospitals who are recovering from various ailments. Processed foods are bad for us for a variety of reasons, like higher sugar contents, fewer vitamins and minerals, and the presence of preservatives and artificial ingredients. It would be nice to see more places attempting to follow what the village of Skidegate is doing.
