Health News Week #11
Chicago has just found tap water in hundreds of homes. The city offered free testing kits for people to test and determine if their drinking tap water was safe, results showed that nearly70% of the 2,797 homes tested had lead in their water. Through the whole city an alarming amount of toxic metals were found, replacing the pipelines are expensive and the mayor's office said it is up to the homeowners and not the city to fix the pipes but of course at their own expense. Lead is unsafe to consume at any level, and it is unfortunate that it is up to each individual household to fix the issue and not the cities.
This is great that the problem was exposed and now people can make changes but it's terrible that it even happened. It's events like this that turn people away from tap water and towards bottled water, which is terrible for the environment. Everyone should have access to clean and harmless tap water. This is especially concerning since tap water is still used for cooking, cleaning, and bathing even if people aren't using it for drinking water. Small children likely have ingested some of the lead tainted water from regualr activities, like bathtime, and we know how dangerous lead can be for their developing brains.
