There’s Human Poop in Glacial Water
It is estimated that since 1970 about 34,000 climbers have deposited about 66 metric tons of poop in the mountain’s Kahlitna Glacier, that has been buried in the ice. The ice protects this and has actually preserved the poop and the fecal bacteria. A team actually discovered deposits that are 70 years old, and although they do not pose a risk to human health yet, they do point out traces of e-Coli and fecal enterococci are showing up in local water sources now. It is very important not to assume the water we drink is clean and safe, it is very important to always filter our water I know I will after reading this article.
It's crazy to think how past human actions can affect us now. What hasn't been a problem for 70 years has the potential to become one due to global warming. While this issue is not a big problem and can relatively easily be mediated, it's important to consider all our actions because while the consequences may not be present in the moment, they can certainly surface later.
