Community And Vegetables Grow Side-By-Side In Syrian Refugee Camp Gardens

Syrian Refugee Ismail is growing food and flowers in Northern Iraq where they live; because it reminds them of their home in Syria. At first, it was difficult for them to grow the garden, but in 2015 members of a U.K-based nonprofit raised awareness to help encourage others to garden in the camp as well. The Lemon Tree trust is the nonprofit organization encouraging the ongoing project to help other refugees by sponsoring home garden competitions that is now an annual event with cash prizes. This ongoing event has brought some hope to the participants and has brought them together as a community, they are now rocking to work with others such as Jordan and Uganda.

  1. Growing flowers is a realtively simple act that can leave a big impact. With all the upheaval and uncertaintly that accompanies fleeing one's home, gardening can help reduce stress and seeing the beautiful flowers can brighten someone else's day. It is amazing how what started as a little project has grown into an annual event with prizes!
